Those changes take years. They are also, in fairness, the ones that produce a line that is there every single time you look.

The hours clock is almost never discussed, and it is the one that actually explains your evening face. It runs on the water content of the stratum corneum — a layer roughly as thick as a sheet of cling film that sits on top of everything else. When that layer is well hydrated, its cells are plump and the surface reads as smooth. What the evidence actually supports (and what it doesn't)

The claim that surface water content changes how smooth skin looks is not marketing. It has been measured directly. Researchers at Shiseido's Skin Biology Research Laboratories recorded skin surface microrelief using silicone rubber replicas and found that within three days of exposure to dry conditions, roughness increased significantly — and that the roughness was partially mitigated either by applying an aqueous glycerol solution or by hydration through immersion in water. One honest caveat that the beauty blogs quoting this literature tend to omit: that study was conducted in hairless mice, not people. It is a mechanism study, and a good one, but it is not a demonstration that your under-eye lines will behave identically.
