Quick answer

Because “hard” and “strong” are not the same property — and most strengtheners sell you the first one. A healthy fingernail works like a spring: it flexes a little under load and returns. Classic nail hardeners work by adding chemical cross-links between the keratin proteins in the nail plate, which raises stiffness. Past a certain point the nail stops bending and starts snapping instead. The US Food and Drug Administration says it plainly: in nail hardeners, formaldehyde “bonds with the keratin that occurs naturally in the nails, making the nails harder,” but “using these nail hardeners often… may make nails brittle and more likely to break or peel.” The American Academy of Dermatology puts the same warning in one sentence: “Polishes that contain strengthening ingredients increase nail stiffness, which may make nails break more frequently.”

So if your nails felt fantastic for three weeks and then began cracking straight across, you probably did not use the product wrong. You used a stiffening product on a problem that needed flexibility. The fix is to stop adding cross-links and start restoring pliability — which is why lipid-based conditioning treatments (a formaldehyde-free concentrate such as Provité Nail Elixir is one example of that category) sit at the opposite end of the shelf from hardeners, and why they behave differently.

Why “harder” backfires: a 60-second materials lesson

The nail plate is not one solid slab. Histologically it is a stack of roughly 196 rows of flattened, dead cells called onychocytes, glued together and cross-linked by an unusually high density of cysteine-derived disulfide bonds — the same chemistry that makes hair keratin durable, packed far tighter (StatPearls, “Histology, Nail”). That layered architecture is the point. Layers can shear slightly against each other and the whole plate can bow a fraction of a millimetre when you press a key, open a can or catch a nail on a car door. The load gets spread out and dissipated.

Engineers separate two properties that everyday language mashes together:

Glass is very hard and not at all tough. Spring steel is less hard and enormously tough. Every marketing line about a “rock-hard shield” is describing the glass end of that trade-off. A traditional hardener works by driving extra chemical bridges into the keratin network. More bridges, less internal movement. Less internal movement, less energy the plate can soak up before something has to give — and when it gives, it gives all at once.

The FDA’s Nail Care Products page describes both halves of that bargain in consecutive sentences, and its phthalate section quietly confirms the physics from the other direction: plasticisers are used in nail polish “to reduce cracking by making the nails less brittle.” The industry’s own solution to cracking is to add flexibility back in, not to add more hardness.

The Snap Test: a 10-second way to tell which problem you actually have

Almost every article on this subject stops at “your nails are damaged.” That is not actionable, because the two commonest failure modes need opposite responses. Here is a diagnostic you can run right now on a nail that has broken, or on the free edge of a nail that is about to.

Press the free edge gently sideways with the pad of your thumb — about the pressure you would use on a computer key — and watch the last 2–3 mm.

The critical insight: rows one and two look identical to a frustrated person at 11 pm, and they call for opposite treatments. If you have been reaching for a hardener because your nails “keep breaking,” and the break is a clean transverse snap, you have been adding stiffness to a nail that was already too stiff.

What is actually in the bottle: a label decoder

“Strengthener,” “hardener,” “fortifier,” “nail builder” and “growth treatment” are marketing words, not chemistry. Four genuinely different mechanisms hide behind them, and the ingredient list tells you which one you bought.

Cleveland Clinic recommends nail conditioners containing lanolin — and specifically says to avoid conditioners containing alcohol, “because that will further dry out your nails.”

Two practical readings of that table. First: a product can be genuinely useful and still be wrong for you — a formaldehyde hardener on a soft, bendy, tearing nail is doing the job it was designed for. Second: if the label carries a film former and a cross-linker and requires acetone to remove, you are stacking three stressors at once.

The removal problem nobody counts

Every coat has to come off. Antonella Tosti’s review in Cosmetics (2017) describes how “keratin degranulation may occur in the process of repeated application, binding, and removal of nail polish to the nail plate,” presenting as white patches and linear markings on the plate — damage that is frequently mistaken for a fungal infection. So the arithmetic of a strengthener is not “one coat, one benefit.” It is coat, wear, solvent, repeat — and the solvent step is a reliable dehydrator. Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Rosemary Keskinen, MD, makes the same point about chipping colour: if it chips you have to replace it, “which dries out the nail.” Her workaround is a formaldehyde-free clear polish left on for a week rather than a colour that demands frequent redoing.

Three things that get blamed on the strengthener but usually are not

  1. Water. The nail loses water faster than skin does, and Cleveland Clinic lists frequent handwashing and sanitising as a leading cause of brittleness for exactly that reason. Repeated swelling and shrinking is what drives layers apart at the tip.
  2. Age. “Brittle nails tend to impact people more as they age,” Dr Keskinen notes, because nails grow more slowly, so each millimetre of plate spends longer exposed to dry air, water and sanitiser before it reaches the free edge. The same product can behave differently at 50 than it did at 25.
  3. Length. A longer free edge is a longer lever arm. The same everyday knock delivers far more bending moment to the stress point. Cleveland Clinic’s advice is blunt: if your nails are breaking, clip or file them temporarily shorter.

There is also a myth worth retiring. The AAD states there is “no scientific evidence that immersing nails in gelatin makes them stronger,” and Dr Keskinen adds from personal experience that drinking gelatin does not work either. You also cannot drink your way to supple nails.

The de-escalation plan: what to actually do, week by week

Here is the part the product blogs skip, because it involves buying nothing for a while. The cross-linked keratin cannot be un-cross-linked; it has to grow out. A fingernail grows at roughly 3 mm per month (StatPearls), which means a complete plate replacement takes on the order of six months. Set expectations accordingly — and note that the timeline below is a practical framework built from published nail-care guidance, not a clinical protocol.

The nail folds and cuticles usually look better within days. The plate itself will not, yet.
Weeks 4–12 — leave the cuticle alone No cutting or aggressive pushing back. The cuticle forms a seal that protects the matrix, and removing it leaves the nail vulnerable (StatPearls; Mayo Clinic). Skip gels and acrylics — the AAD warns against using artificial nails to cover up brittle or damaged nails, as they “may make them worse.” Around 1–2 cm of new plate will have emerged. Compare the flex of the new growth near the cuticle with the old plate at the tip — that contrast is your progress bar.
Months 3–6 — grow it off Keep conditioning. Keep the length modest. If you want colour, a clear or single long-wear coat beats frequent repainting. The treated band reaches the free edge and gets clipped away. This is the point at which most people say their nails “recovered.”
Ongoing — reintroduce carefully If you go back to a strengthener, use it time-limited and stop at the first clean transverse snap. Take breaks from gels and acrylics (Cleveland Clinic). You now have a personal early-warning signal instead of a mystery.

On supplements: Cleveland Clinic notes that a daily biotin supplement of around 5,000 micrograms may improve nail health, with roughly six to eight weeks before any difference shows — and flags adequate protein intake as well. Worth discussing with your own clinician, particularly as biotin can interfere with some laboratory blood tests.

Why a lipid concentrate behaves differently from a hardener

The logic of the conditioning approach is that it works on the property you actually lost. Rather than adding bridges between keratin proteins, a lipid treatment aims to sit within and across the plate’s layers, supporting pliability instead of resisting it. Plant lipids reduce water loss through occlusion regardless of how deeply they travel, and their fatty-acid composition governs how far they get (Lin, Zhong & Santiago, Int J Mol Sci 2018) — which is why formulation, not marketing category, decides the result. And crucially, a conditioning treatment is not a film that has to be dissolved off again with solvent every week or two, so it does not carry the removal tax described above.

Frequently asked questions

Can a nail strengthener really make nails weaker?

It can make them break more easily, which is what most people mean by weaker. The FDA states that frequent use of formaldehyde-containing nail hardeners “may make nails brittle and more likely to break or peel,” and the American Academy of Dermatology notes that polishes containing strengthening ingredients “increase nail stiffness, which may make nails break more frequently.” The plate is not thinner or softer — it is stiffer, and a stiffer plate fractures at a lower impact.

How long does it take for nails to recover after stopping a hardener?

Longer than most people expect. Because the affected keratin has to grow off the end, and a fingernail grows around 3 mm a month, a full plate replacement takes roughly six months. You should see the newest growth near the cuticle behaving better within four to eight weeks, but the old brittle band stays brittle until you clip it away.

Is formaldehyde in nail products banned?

Not in the United States. The FDA regulates nail products as cosmetics and notes that formaldehyde may appear on labels as formaldehyde, formalin or methylene glycol, and that people who want to avoid it should also watch for toluene sulfonamide/formaldehyde resin. The FDA’s position is that many nail ingredients are permitted because they are safe when used as directed — but “as directed” and “every week for two years” are not the same thing.

My nails peel in layers at the tip. Will a strengthener fix that?

Usually not, and it may make it worse. Layered peeling at the free edge is onychoschizia, which DermNet attributes to water and detergent damage. The intervention that matches that cause is reducing wet–dry cycling — gloves for washing up and cleaning — and conditioning the plate afterwards, not adding stiffness.

Are gel or acrylic nails a reasonable way to protect brittle nails while they recover?

The AAD advises against it: “Do not wear artificial nails to cover up nail problems as they may make them worse,” and states artificial nails “are not recommended for people who are prone to fungal infections or have brittle nails.” Getting acrylics to adhere requires filing the natural nail rough, which thins it further, and removal means soaking in acetone or filing off.

Does biotin work for brittle nails?

Cleveland Clinic says a daily biotin supplement of around 5,000 micrograms can improve nail health, and that you need to wait roughly six to eight weeks to see a difference. Check with your own doctor first, particularly if you have blood tests scheduled, since biotin can interfere with certain laboratory assays.

What about nail polish remover — does it matter which one I use?

Yes. Mayo Clinic advises limiting polish remover and choosing acetone-free formulas, and the AAD recommends applying a moisturising cream to nails after removing polish, “since most removers contain chemicals that dry the nails.” If you are already dealing with brittleness, cutting the number of removal events matters as much as which remover you pick.

When to stop self-treating and see someone

Brittleness that follows a clear cosmetic cause and improves when you change the cause is usually a cosmetic problem. Book an appointment with a doctor or dermatologist if you notice: grooving or separation of the nail plate; redness, swelling or soreness in the skin folds around a nail; nails that are thickening or turning yellow alongside the cracking; a new dark streak; or a change in nail shape. Cleveland Clinic also notes that brittleness can occasionally be a marker of fungal infection, nutritional deficiency, psoriasis, thyroid disorders or Raynaud’s syndrome — all of which need a diagnosis rather than a different bottle.

The bottom line

A nail strengthener that made your nails worse was not necessarily defective, and you probably did not misuse it. It did what stiffening chemistry does. The mismatch was between the property it adds — hardness — and the property your nails needed, which was the ability to bend a little and come back. Run the Snap Test, work out which failure mode you actually have, stop feeding the wrong one, and give the plate the six months it needs to replace itself.
